My wife and I have gotten into the habit of playing cards at night before we turn in or on the weekends when we are at home and don't feel like going out to do something. For me, it is a great past-time and reminds me of being little playing cards all day with my grandparents when school was cancelled. Since we have been playing so much recently, I had a thought. What is everyone's favorite card game?

One of my favorites, though I've not played it much (OK once... but have watched it be played for years), is 31. It's similar to blackjack, except you use three cards and try to get to 31. Last time I played was at a family reunion, and I won. It was fun too because I had only seen it played at the reunions over the years, but never played it. A cousin, however, wondered how they got a "card shark" in the family.

I have never played, nor even heard of, 31. How do you come up with the concept? What's the next new wave of BLACKJACK-like games....11? You have one card to get as close as possible to 11?

Oh gosh, 31's been around longer than I have, so it's definitely been around longer than you think. They played this at our family reunions as long as I've been to them, and I'm sure longer. I don't know how they came up with the concept (11? What would they do... hope they get the Joker? ), but the rules are fairly simple. I won my first time playing, and I had only been watching it before then. If you guys' want me to list the rules, I'd be happy too. Another card game I liked playing was Spoons, which is a cross between cards, Hungry Hungry Hippos (you had to steal a spoon once in a while) and hangman. Unfortunately, I played this when I was a kid (I think I was 7 or 8), so I don't remember the rules. I can find out though.

Spoons. . .is a dangerous game. I know. I had the bruises to prove it. (Long story)
I personally enjoy Rummy. My sister and I play it sometimes. We had a running game from 2002. . .I found the paper on which we were keep score the other day. I thought to myself, "Yeah. I think we can just start from scratch." We've also been known to get into arguments over certain moves, at which point we consult our mom or dad.
We like to play poker too. Usually just the basic 5 card draw. I've tried playing Texas Hold 'Em, but it's usually once a year for the past two years, over at my friend John's house. So I usually don't remember much.

The worst game I'm a dealer in is Blackjack. I used to be one for the RHA casino nights at the university and couldn't shuffle the five or six decks extremely well. People loved playing my table for that reason (though I could and did have a decent house average) just because they had a better precentage. Didn't mind actually, as that meant even wilder bidding that night for prizes. I normally just went home because it was late by the time the started bidding and given how bouncy they got at times, I didn't want to get bumped in the nose with someone's arm. Needless to say, if I ever worked in Las Vegas, I'd be working more in the entertainment (such as Cirque or a juggling show) or watching out for card sharks than a dealer.

How do you have an argument over certain moves? Do you play a different version than some of us? Good call, MyTatuo...I am an UNO fan as well. I also like 4 and 11 point pitch as well as 7-up, the game not the drink. How do you play gin rummy? How does it differ from Egyptian? And Mel, I don't need the rules to 31 or Spoons, but thanks for offering.

I used to also play Slap Jack, but after getting my hand rapped a few times with very heavy rings in the process (especially on the knuckles), I gave it up and stuck to watching 31. It was fun to watch the grown-ups play this game and joke about rapping their knuckles on the table too soon and having one call others card sharks (though he got caught cheating once. )
